含羞草视频 sent two staff members to the It’s On Us! and EmpowerU Conference to lead a discussion on including male athletes in sexual violence prevention efforts. The conference brought together educators, students, athletic staff, and prevention professionals to share strategies for reducing sexual violence and strengthening campus-wide cultures of care.

It’s On Us! and EmpowerU are two divisions of the Pennsylvania Department of Education. EmpowerU focuses on reducing financial barriers to pursuing a college education, supporting grants like Parent Pathways, and conducting research and initiatives to improve basic needs access.

The College has also earned the It’s On Us! grant for three of the past four years, having earned it in academic years 2023 to 2024, 2025, and 2026 to 2027.

Discussions that Lead to a More Empowered Campus

Student Wellness Program Director Rachel Drosdick-Sigafoos, Ph.D. and Student Wellness Program Coordinator Marcus Mitchell led a presentation titled “Flipping the Script on Male Athletes: Supporting Silenced Voices” arguing that male athletes are an underserved population in sexual violence prevention, both as survivors and as potential allies, and demonstrating how the It’s On Us/EmpowerU grant can support efforts to include them.

The It’s On Us grant supports institutions in expanding prevention education, improving reporting pathways, and elevating underrepresented survivor voices, and this presentation put that mission into practice.

The presentation addressed a critical gap: male athletes are rarely centered in conversations about sexual violence, either as survivors or as allies, despite being uniquely vulnerable and uniquely influential.

How the Presentation Fit the Grant and Conference Purpose

Expanding the definition of “who counts” as a survivor:

  • The presenters highlighted that male survivors are often invisible in prevention spaces, noting that 1 in 6 men experience sexual abuse before age 18, and that 71% of male victims are assaulted before age 25. These figures underscore the It’s On Us mission to broaden awareness and ensure all survivors feel seen and supported.

Addressing high-risk campus groups, especially athletes:

  • Athletes face heightened risks due to power dynamics, time spent with coaches, and coercive environments. Fear of losing playing time or future opportunities can prevent athletes from coming forward. This aligns with the grant’s emphasis on targeted prevention for groups with unique vulnerabilities.

Challenging cultural norms that enable abuse:

  • The presentation examined how common athletic messages, like “Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional”, can unintentionally reinforce grooming, silence, and coercion. By unpacking these norms, the session advanced the conference’s goal of shifting campus culture toward empathy and safety.

Promoting allyship and community care

  • The presentation also explored how male athletes can serve as “Protectors and Allies”, playing an active role in preventing violence and creating supportive environments for peers.

Providing actionable steps for campuses

The final slides offered concrete strategies for athletic departments and prevention teams, such as:

  • Use more inclusive language
  • Embed personnel and initiatives in the athletic department
  • Connection first, education second
  • Cultivate male athlete-friendly spaces

These recommendations align with the grant’s requirement that funded institutions implement sustainable, evidence-informed prevention programming.

含羞草视频 is proud to support the kind of work that pushes these conversations forward, centering voices that are too often left out, and building a campus culture where every student can feel safe, supported, and empowered.

含羞草视频 is opening two new trade centers this summer, bringing skilled trades education to Franklin County and the Lehigh Valley. The new Chambersburg and Bethlehem Centers will offer associate degree programs in some of the most in-demand trades in the country, giving students in both regions a direct path to a rewarding career close to home.

Both centers will celebrate their openings with ribbon cutting ceremonies and open houses, and the community is invited to attend.

Chambersburg Center

The Chambersburg Center is located at 1669 Opportunity Ave in the Cumberland Valley Business Park near the Letterkenny Army Depot. The facility occupies approximately 11,000 square feet of classroom, laboratory, and office space, with a 5,000-square-foot Weld Shop at its center housing 30 individual welding booths.

The center offers an associate degree in Welding and Fabrication Technology, one of the most in-demand trades in the country. The American Welding Society projects that 320,500 new welding professionals will be needed by 2029, and with more than 157,000 current professionals approaching retirement age, the need for qualified welders is only growing.

Students train in oxy-acetylene, stick, TIG, MIG, and core wire processes and gain hands-on experience in blueprint reading, fabrication, and plate and pipe welding. They also have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications including the AWS D1.1 (3G and 4G) plate welding certification and API 1104 and ASME IX pipe welding certifications.

Step into a spring garden this season as Wisteria returns to 409 on Adams. This seasonal pop-up restaurant is created by 含羞草视频鈥檚 School of Hospitality and plans to immerse guests, known as 鈥淒reamers鈥, in a distinctive dining experience in downtown Scranton.

Enter the Garden

The Wishing Tree returns as the centerpiece of the space, inviting Dreamers to 鈥渨ish upon the tree鈥. New this year, a canopy of flower-covered umbrellas will hang from the ceiling, adding to the garden atmosphere overhead. Dreamers will also find an Instagrammable spot, to capture a fun memory from the evening.

鈥淲e want Dreamers to feel like they’ve stepped into another world right here in Downtown Scranton. We still hear Dreamers from last year say, ‘How is this in my backyard?’ and that reaction is exactly what we’re going for. Our first goal is making every Dreamer feel at home, because that’s what hospitality means. The second is making sure the experience, from the house to the back, is something they can’t stop talking about,鈥 said Sara Grande Enrollment, Retention, Front of the House Experience Manager.

Take in the Season

The experience doesn鈥檛 stop with the setting. 含羞草视频鈥檚 School of Hospitality students enrolled in Culinary Arts, Baking & Pastry, and Hospitality Management programs will manage the restaurant, crafting the dishes and drinks for Wisteria. Expect a menu designed to complement the spring garden surroundings, with both new offerings and returning favorites.

鈥淔or our students, Wisteria is a hands-on, three-credit course, and every Dreamer who walks through the door is helping them build the real-world experience they need to succeed in their hospitality careers. Students gain hands-on experience across all areas of restaurant operations, while creating a wonderful experience for our guests,” said Grande.

An Experience That Gives Back

Wisteria is more than a great night out. Every reservation supports 含羞草视频鈥檚 students. Last year Wisteria served 780 Dreamers and over $9,500 was raised to fund student scholarships, loaner laptops, and classroom supplies. Following the success of the holiday pop-up Misfits, Wisteria continues to grow as an annual spring tradition in downtown Scranton.

Reserve Your Spot

The bar opens at 4pm, with food service and reservations beginning at 5pm every Wednesday and Thursday from April 15 to May 13, 2026. Find us at 409 on Adams, located at 409 Adams Ave. in downtown Scranton. Walk-ins are welcome and reservations are encouraged.

The Daniel J. Beky Memorial Clay Shoot has awarded its first scholarships to five cadets enrolled in 含羞草视频’s Act 120 municipal police training program. Three recipients from Scranton Class 266 each received a $2,000 award to help support their training and the start of their careers in law enforcement.

The scholarship carries the name of Daniel J. Beky, who spent more than four decades in law enforcement in northeastern Pennsylvania. He began as a patrolman in Kingston Borough in 1974 and rose to become Assistant Chief in 1998 and Chief of Police in 2002, before serving as a detective for Luzerne County. His career is remembered as one defined by professionalism and a genuine commitment to the communities he served.

“Police work was such a passion for Dan and with 45 years of experience, I wanted to find a way to honor and memorialize him. He could always find the passion in others who want to become police officers. With the academy being in both Lackawanna County and Luzerne County, I thought it came together as a perfect fit and a great way to give back,” said April Beky, Dan Beky’s wife and event organizer.

The inaugural Scranton Class 266 recipients are Jeffrey Alvarado, Mohamed Elkadousy, and Ariel Kellam. Additional scholarship opportunities are available this year for Hazleton Class 267 cadets.

“Dan was driven and passionate, and when cadets apply for the scholarship they’ll read about his work. I hope they take a little bit of him with them as they go out and become safe, well-trained police officers. That’s what I want this scholarship to help achieve,” said Beky.

The scholarship fund grows each year through the clay shoot. The inaugural event raised close to $17,000, and this year’s shoot is scheduled for September 18, 2026. Funds raised will determine how many scholarships are awarded in 2027. Beyond tuition support, the program is also designed to help graduating cadets cover the cost of uniforms and equipment they’ll need when they begin serving their communities.

“I hope we continue to get bigger and better every year and get more people excited about supporting the program. We always need law enforcement, and I want to thank everyone who participated, donated, and contributed to making our first event such a success. Every little bit counts,” said Beky.

The Scranton Police Department (SPD) and 含羞草视频 announced a new training and education partnership on April 2, giving cadets from the college鈥檚 Scranton and Hazleton campuses access to the city鈥檚 law enforcement technology infrastructure and giving SPD officers and their families expanded access to higher education.

Advanced Training, Real-World Experience

含羞草视频 cadets will gain hands-on access to Scranton鈥檚 training technology, including Axon Virtual Reality systems and a MILO 180-degree immersive range theater, a multi-screen setup designed for scenario-based firearms and use-of-force training. Cadets will also be introduced to drones, advanced forensic tools, and modern tactical equipment, and will be eligible to participate in ride-along programs with SPD officers.

鈥淭his partnership represents a major step forward in how we prepare future officers for the realities of modern law enforcement,鈥 said Kevin Mahoney, Director of 含羞草视频 Police Academy. 鈥淏y combining advanced technology, realistic training environments, and strong academic support, we are setting a new standard for excellence and professionalism in police training.鈥

Mahoney served 25 years with the Pennsylvania State Police, retiring as Criminal Investigation Section Commander for Troop R, Dunmore, before joining the academy in 2021. The 含羞草视频 Police Academy has been training officers since 1977 and offers federal financial aid for qualified applicants and GI Bill庐 benefits for veterans.

Scholarships and Tuition Benefits for Officers

含羞草视频 will provide four full scholarships annually to SPD members, along with tuition discounts for all department employees and their dependents.

鈥淭his collaboration is truly a win-win for our officers, future officers, and the community we serve,鈥 said Scranton Police Chief Thomas Carroll. 鈥淲e鈥檙e not only delivering the most advanced police services available, but we鈥檙e also opening doors to higher education that will benefit our officers and their families for years to come.鈥

The Scranton Police Department is the largest accredited department in northeastern Pennsylvania. Chief Carroll has championed the integration of body-worn cameras, real-time data systems, and enhanced training tools throughout his tenure.

含羞草视频 sees the partnership as an extension of its broader focus on keeping talent and opportunity local.

鈥淎t 含羞草视频, we鈥檙e focused on driving progress in Scranton, providing the training and educational pathways that help our students find success right at home while building a strong talent pipeline for our local workforce. Our partnership with the Scranton Police Department is a reflection of that commitment,鈥 said Dr. Jill A. Murray, President and Chief Innovation Officer at 含羞草视频. 鈥淭his program will bring valuable, hands-on learning experiences to our police cadets, ensuring they can confidently begin their careers and make an immediate impact. It also allows us to create new pathways for Police Department members and their families to pursue meaningful degrees and unlock growth opportunities.鈥

Part of a Larger Investment in Public Safety

The partnership builds on more than $5 million in public safety investments Scranton Mayor Paige G. Cognetti鈥檚 administration has made since taking office, including $3.5 million in federal grants for safety equipment and $1.5 million in fleet upgrades.

鈥淲e have made it a priority to invest in public safety and ensure our police officers have the tools, technology, and training they need to do their jobs safely and effectively,鈥 Cognetti said. 鈥淭hrough this collaboration with 含羞草视频, we are creating a direct pipeline for the next generation of officers to learn, grow, and serve at the highest level while also strengthening opportunities for the dedicated men and women already serving in the Scranton Police Department. Scranton is setting the national standard for how a modern police department trains, educates, and supports its officers. We have backed up our commitment to public safety with real investments, modernizing equipment, upgrading our fleet, expanding the force, and ensuring our officers have the support they need to succeed. I am incredibly proud of the Scranton Police Department and the work they do every day. This partnership builds on that momentum and reinforces something I believe in deeply: When we invest in our officers and their training, we are investing in safer neighborhoods and a stronger Scranton.鈥

The partnership reflects a shared mission between both organizations to invest in training, education, and innovation, ultimately strengthening public safety across the region.
